Privacy Information
Your information is safe with us. We will only use your e-mail
address to send you a confirmation of your order, unless you choose to be
placed on our e-mailing list. We do not track how often you visit our
site, what you look at, etc. (see Cookies Information below).
We do not sell or otherwise provide your information to any marketing
firm, other businesses, etc. We hate getting telemarketing calls at dinnertime
and SPAM e-mail as much as you do. For our protection, your IP address is
logged when you visit our site. This is the same as *69 on the telephone
if you were to call us--we don't know who you are, but we have something to use
to find you if you try to hack our site. Our server statistics also keep
cumulative statistics of browser versions, so we know what features we can
implement in the future.
Security Information
Our site is secured by a digital certificate from GeoTrust, a leading provider
of internet commerce security. Their logo is a symbol of your protection
in three ways:
1) In order to be granted a digital certificate, we are required to
validate our identity. This lets you know you are dealing with a reputable
business. (In fact, we've been in Butler since 1939!)
2) The digital certificate encodes the information between your
computer and our servers. This protects information such as your address and
credit card number from prying eyes. When you see the prefix "https://" in the
address bar of your browser, your browser will display an icon (a glowing key
in Netscape, a lock in Internet Explorer). When you see this icon, any
information transmitted between your browser and our server is encoded so that
only we and you can read it. Every time you visit our site, the digital
certificate generates a new "key". You never even notice this happens. See the
help files of your browser, or GeoTrust's website (www.geotrust.com)
for more information on how digital certificates work.
3) The logo you see is not a file stored on our website. It is
not even a real image at all--it is created at the precise moment you load this
page by GeoTrust's servers. Their servers validate the identity of this
website when you load this page; if our identity is not confirmed, their seal
does not appear.
Once your information is stored on our server, it is protected in
other ways. For security reasons, we can't discuss them thoroughly.
Cookies Information
"Cookies" are small bits of information that are stored on your
computer. You may have heard bad things about cookies, but they're not all
bad. True, some companies use cookies to track who you are, where you go,
and what you do, and sell this information to telemarketing firms. Some
of our large competitors even track how long you spend looking at a particular
arrangement, and plan their marketing around the statistics they collect!
However, most cookies have good uses. If you have a "My Yahoo" or "My
Lycos" (or whatever) site, that information is stored in a cookie. If
you've ever ordered anything on-line, chances are, that site used cookies.
Cookies can only be read by the domain (i.e., website) that placed
them there--Yahoo's cookies can't be read by Microsoft, we can't read Amazon's,
etc. Some cookies last forever, some disappear as soon as you close your
browser. Again, see your browser's help file for more information about
cookies.
Our ordering system relies cookies to function. It is the most
efficient method to keep your order straight and separate from someone else's
on our site at the same time. We do not track who you are, how often you
visit, what you look at--none of that. You can choose to clear all of the
cookies once your order is placed. If you have your browser set to not
allow cookies, you may not be able to order from our site. You should
either change this setting while visiting our site, or call us (724-285-1711 or
800-729-1711) when you have your order all worked out.
Thanks for visiting The Bloomery, and we hope you find our site
useful.
